Rewards are a popular tool in fitness apps, workplace wellbeing programs and insurance schemes. They are useful, but they are not a substitute for a goal that fits your life.

What rewards are good at
Rewards are most useful early, when a habit has no momentum of its own and the benefits of activity are still invisible. They give the first few weeks a reason to happen on schedule.
They also add a clear marker of completion. Finishing a week and receiving something small makes an abstract goal feel finished rather than endless.
Where rewards fall short
A reward cannot make an unrealistic target reachable. If the goal is far above your current activity, an incentive mostly adds pressure.
Rewards can also narrow attention to the measured thing. If steps are rewarded, other valuable activity — swimming, cycling, resistance training — can feel like it does not count, even when it clearly does.
Using rewards without leaning on them
Treat the reward as recognition for a week you completed, not as the reason you moved. Keep the underlying goal something you would still want to hit without it.
Keep the value modest and the rules simple. Small, predictable recognition sustains attention better than a large prize that most people will never reach.
